🌊 PADI Open Water Course Overview

Goal: Become a certified diver to dive independently (with a buddy) to a maximum depth of 18 meters / 60 feet.

Duration: Typically 3–4 days (can vary depending on location and schedule).

Prerequisites:

Minimum age: 10 years old (Junior Open Water Diver); 15+ for full Open Water Diver

Ability to swim 200 meters (or snorkel 300 meters) and float/tread water for 10 minutes

Medically fit for diving (you may need a doctor’s clearance)

🧠 Step 1 - Knowledge Development

Format: Online (eLearning), classroom, or a combination

What You Learn

How pressure affects your body underwater

Equipment basics: regulator, BCD, tank, wetsuit, etc.

Dive planning and safety rules (e.g., buddy system)

Understanding dive tables or a dive computer

How to handle common problems underwater

Tools

PADI eLearning (most common now)

Videos, quizzes, and a final exam

Tip: You can start this part from home before going to a dive shop.

🤿 Step 2 - Confined Water Dives

Where: In a pool or pool-like environment

What You Practice

Breathing underwater

Clearing your mask and regulator

Buoyancy control

Basic underwater navigation

Emergency procedures (e.g., sharing air, controlled ascents)

 

*Usually 5 confined water sessions are conducted over 1–2 pool sessions at our Lewisham pool.

🌊 Step 3 - Open Water Dives

Where: Leybourne Lakes country park

Number of dives: 4 dives over 2 days (sometimes more should you need it)

What You Do:

Repeat and apply confined water skills in real conditions

Practice descent/ascent techniques, buoyancy, and safety stops

Learn how to set up and care for your gear

Log each dive with your instructor

 

* Dives are supervised, and you’ll gradually build confidence and comfort.

After completing all components (theory, pool sessions, and open water dives), you become a PADI Open Water Diver. Your certification:

Never expires

Recognized worldwide

Allows you to rent gear, book dive trips, and dive up to 18m (60ft) with a buddy
